Tom Cruise, 1984, NewSpeak, and the Language of Scientology

You have probably heard that George Orwell's fiction Nineteen Eighty-Four contains a thought controlling language.

If you are not familiar with the fiction, here's a intro from Wikipedia:

1984 is a dystopian novel about the totalitarian regime of the Party, an oligarchical collectivist society where life in the Oceanian province of Airstrip One is a world of perpetual war, pervasive government surveillance, public mind control, and the voiding of citizens' rights. In the Ministry of Truth (Minitrue), protagonist Winston Smith is a civil servant responsible for perpetuating the Party's propaganda by revising historical records to render the Party omniscient and always correct, yet his meager existence disillusions him into rebellion against Big Brother, which leads to his arrest, torture, and conversion.

Nineteen Eighty-Four

In the novel, it has a new language Newspeak, a language used by Big Brother to control thought.

I've never made the connection, but today, i realized, that there is actually one such language, in relative wide use, for the exact same purpose of thought control. That language, is the language of Scientology.

Here's a little example:

Two Scientologists meet on the street.

“How're you doing?” one asks the other.

“Well, to tell you the truth, I've been a bit out ruds because of a PTP with my second dynamic because of some bypassed charge having to do with my MEST at her apartment. When I moved in I gave her an R-factor and I thought we were in ARC about it, but lately she seems to have gone a bit PTS so I recommended she see the MAA at the AO to blow some charge and get her ethics in. He gave her a review to F/N and VGIs but she did a roller coaster, so I think there's an SP somewhere on her lines. I tried to audit her myself but she had a dirty needle and BIs and was acting really 1.1 so I finally sent her to Qual to spot the entheta on her lines. Other than that, everything's fine…”

Perhaps you might think this is fiction. Actually, if you don't know already, in my teens (1990) i worked for Scientology for a month, so technically, i was a Scientologist. I experienced in this language environment for a month. Not to such heavy degree as depicted in the above made-up conversation, but again i'm just a new recruit doing mass-mailing labor for them. It never stroke me as a new language, but the aspect that they have their own dictionary and encyclopedia about everything made a big impression on me. Here's some scientology loaded words he used:

• KSW = Keeping Scientology Working. A policy written by Hubbard in the 1960's that requires all Scientologists to follow his words and his rules exactly.
• Orgs = abbrev for “organizations”. Scientologist refers itself as “org”.
• David Miscavige = Current head of Scientology. Analogous to Pope of the Catholics.
• Out-ethics = any behavior that violates any of Hubbard's rules of conduct.
• Put ethics in on someone else = make others conform to Hubbard's rules of behavior.
• Criminon = Scientology front group that tries to recruit through the prisons.
• PTS = Potential Trouble Source.
• SP = Suppressive Person. Anyone that doesn't like Scientology and/or criticizes Scientology.
• Tech = LRH technology. All the Scientology policies, rules, mandates, procedures.

Scientology Jargons

1. ACK(-KNOWLEDGEMENT) of communication; “OK”, “Thank you”, etcetera.
2. ADMIN(-ISTRATION) cult bureacracy, laid down in great detail.
3. AFFINITY, cult word for love or liking.
4. ARC / Affinity Reality Communication: signifies “rapport”.
5. ARCX/ARC BREAK: argument, cross puposes, abscence of rapport.
6. ARS / Alt Religion Scientology: newsgroup, mainly critical, about CoS.
7. ACT / Alt Clearing Technology: newsgroup for independent scientologists.
8. ARS-CC (Central Committe) secret cabal which is of course plotting all activity on ARS financed by drug companies and the Markab Confederacy.
9. AUDITING: scientology confessional ritual; AUDITOR administers it.
10. BANK, MEMORY- or REACTIVE MIND, stores up hurtful memories (ENGRAMS).
11. BARRATRY (English word) bringing lengthy and vexatious lawsuits.
12. BASH: favourite FREEZONE word for “criticise”, to discourage analysis.
13. BEINGNESS: being something. Similarly DOINGNESS, HAVINGNESS.
14. BIG WIN: maginificent achievement, usually spiritual i.e. imaginary.
15. BILLION YEAR CONTRACT, for many lifetimes, signed in the SEA ORG q.v.
16. BLOW: depart suddenly (fifties slang), leave the cult.
17. BODY THETANS: degraded spirits parasitic on the bodies of others.
18. BRIDGE (TO TOTAL FREEDOM) progress through levels of Scn enlightenment.
19. CULT AWARENESS NETWORK,formerly anti-cult organisation taken over by Scn
20. CASE(-STATE), your progress in Scn, seen as a sort of psychotherapy.
21. C/S, CASE SUPERVISOR, person supervising AUDITORS and their clients.
22. CLAMS: Hubbard says humans evolved from them, hence nickname for Scienos
23. CLEAR: having achieved the first main step to Scn enlightenment.
24. COGNITION: sudden new insight, the desired end point of an AUDITING process; the Cog for CLEAR is “I am mocking up my reactive mind”.
25. COMMODORE: HUBBARD, a rank he awarded himself; also CommodeDoor etc.
26. CoS/Church of $cientology (abbreviation).
27. DAMNATION NAVY: sarcastic nickname for the SEA ORG(after Salvation Army)
28. DEAD AGENT: to respond to argument with frenzied personal attack on the speaker to discredit them. DECLARE someone an S.P.; excommunicate them.
29. DIANETICS: original psychotherapy form of Scn, before it got religion.
30. DISCONNECTION: being told by Scn to cut links with friends or family.
31. DM, DAVID(*)MISCAVIGE -- the symbol signifies buttocks round a puckered anus -- current leader of Scn; also POODLE-BOY, TIDYBOWL MAN &c.
32. DYNAMICS are in order 1self 2family 3tribe…8the_infinite; “2D” means (as an activity) sex or (as a person) partner.
33. ED/EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: head of an ORG (q.v.)
34. E-METER: skin resistance meter used to detect reaction in AUDITING.
35. ENGRAM: a remembered moment of pain inhibitting future actions.
36. ENTURBULATE: cult word for annoy, harrass, disturb.
37. EP/END PHENOMENON: desired end result of a Scn AUDITING process.
38. ETHICS: discipline applied for low production / department applying it.
39. EXTERIORISE: leave the body and act as a spirit.
40. FAIR GAME: to subject an enemy of Scn to harassment and dirty tricks.
41. FSM/Field Staff Member: Scn travelling salesman on 15% commission.
42. FLAG: centre of command, formerly on Hubbard's ship, now in Florida.
43. FLUB: to fail, or cock it up; a failure, a cockup (50s slang)
44. FLUNK!you have failed, start again! (50s american slang)
45. F/N, FLOATING NEEDLE on the E-METER indicates calm contentment.
46. FREEZONE, FREEZONER: independent scientology, scientologist outside CoS.
47. G.I./GROSS INCOME statistic for an ORG -- what $cientology is all about.
48. G.O./GUARDIANS OFFICE: dirty tricks department, now renamed O.S.A.
49. GRADES or levels within Scn (specifically grades 0..7 lead up to CLEAR).
50. GREEN VOLUMES are directives on ADMIN, red volumes directives on TECH.
51. HANDLE: favourite cult word for “deal with” (a person, situation, etc).
52. HAT: a job function; HATTED assigned or trained for a hat.
53. HCO/Hubbard Communications Office. HCO-PL/Policy Letter would be on ADMIN, HCO-B/Bulletin would be on TECH.
54. HUBBARD, L. RON: f(L)ounder of Scientology; also PHATSO, EL ROTUNDO etc.
55. 'HO (OF BABBLE-ON): Scn trained attack-lawyer Helena Kobrin (ARS usage).
56. IMPLANT: delusion implanted in us by the forces of evil.

71. M/U -- Misunderstood Word, supposedly source of all failure to understand or agree cult texts; a way of stopping thought and discouraging questions
72. NARCONON, Scn drug rehabilitation front group to scam medicaid funding.
73. N.E.D,NEW ERA DIANETICS, is DIANETICS revised to include past lives &c.
74. N.E.D. for OTs (NOTS), now replaces O.T.LEVELS 4 through 7.
75. OPERATION SNOW WHITE, an operation by the G.O. to infiltrate government departments and steal files hostile to Scn.
76. OPERATION FOOT-BULLET, alleged operation by Scn to get sympathy by shooting themselves in the foot through disastrous public relations.
77. ORG(-ANISATION), a Scn local operation or “church” and its building.
78. O.S.A./OFFICE OF SPECIAL AFFAIRS, dirty tricks dept formely the G.O.; insiders sometimes pronounce it “OhZer” rather than as separate letters
79. O.T. /OPERATING THETAN, a THETAN (soul, spirit) able to leave the body at will and attain godlike powers; O.T.LEVELS, I..VIII, courses supposed to produce this state. O.T.3 in paricular introduces XEMU and the key idea of BODY THETANS.
80. OUT-ETHICS, in breach of disciple; OUT-2D breach of discipline re sex.
81. PC/PRE-CLEAR: subject receiving AUDITING to reach the state of CLEAR.
82. PT /PRESENT TIME: Scns aim to live unreflectively in PT.
83. PTS/POTENTIAL TROUBLE SOURCE (for the cult); member in touch with an evil influence or SUPPRESSIVE PERSON.
84. PURIFICATION RUNDOWN: a step taken early in the grades which involves lots of sweating in saunas and dangerously high doses of vitamin pills.
85. RAW MEAT: chumps, punters, potential recruits.
86. R(-OUTINE) 2, processes to exteriorise the spirit from the body; R2-45, R2 process#45, exteriorising by use of a large calibre pistol.
87. R(-OUTINE) 6, that used in the clearing course; but the related R6 IMPLANT turns up in O.T.3 etcetera and is the source of christianity.
88. RUD(-IMENT)S: preliminary questions to deal with current upsets or concerns before proceeding with the main part of AUDITING.
89. RUN, “run an (auditing) process on a PreClear”, take then through the steps or questions. RUN-DOWN complete set of steps or questions.
90. REG(-ISTRAR): salesperson in an Org; REG someone, sell them courses.
91. RICE and BEANS, punishment diet on R.P.F.

95. SCAMIZDAT, samizdat (self-publishing) about scams, a person{s} who distributed Scn secret crud anonymously all over the Internet.
96. SCIENTOLOGY -- means “science of knowing” -- a quack therapy disguised as a religion, devised in 1950 by a conman called L.Ron HUBBARD.
97. SEA ORG: originally the Org (parish) based round Hubbard on his ship the Apollo, now a sort of religious SS in paramiltary naval uniforms.
98. SOURCE: Hubbard; ON-SOURCE: correct in accord with Hubbard's writings.
99. SP/SUPPRESSIVE PERSON: enemy, excommunicated; a title taken on freely by critics who award SP-Levels for achievement in mockery of O.T.LEVELS
100. SQUIRREL: heretic, FREEZONER, scientologist independent of the “church”.
101. STAT(-SISTIC)S of production, by which eveything is measured.
102. TECH(-NOLOGY), the beliefs and quack therapies of Scientology.
103. THETAN, soul or spirit; THETA = good vibes; ENTHETA = bad vibes.
104. TONE SCALE: along which various emotions are arranged. Critics, gays, and other meanies are at “TONE 1.1”. TONE 40 = popeyed and screaming orders like a loon (supposedly, in total control of the situation).
105. TRs/TRAINING ROUTINES: staring without speaking and other drills prepartory to giving or receiving AUDITING.
106. WALL OF FIRE, destruction of the world by fire in INCIDENT2 of O.T.3
107. WOG, derogatory Scn name for non-believers (in British English it is equivalent to n****r for Arabs and Indians, after the golliwog doll)
108. XEMU, galactic tyrant and chief villain in INCIDENT2 of O.T.3; Hubbard sometimes spells it XENU, and variously pronounces it ZEE-MYOO or ZEE-MOO
