華人元宵節活動有悠久歷史，亦稱為上元節、小正月、元夕、小年或燈節，閩南語稱為元宵（台羅，下同：guân-siau）、元宵節（guân-siau-tseh）、上元（siōng-guân）、正月半（tsiann-gue̍h-puànn）。時間是每年的農曆正月十五。這天是农历新年的第一個月圓之夜，象徵著春天的到來，華人傳統會吃元宵、賞花燈、猜燈謎，以示祝賀。這是傳統新春定義的最後一天，亦是春節假期之後的第一個重要節日。中國明朝錢塘瞿佑《雙頭牡丹燈記》：“每歲元夕，於明州張燈五夜。傾城士女，皆得縱觀”。青年男女外出觀燈並趁機結識、相會，所以也有「中國情人節」的別稱[1]。
佛教有在正月十五點燈供佛的習俗。而道教中，上元節視為天官大帝（堯）誕辰，正月十五為上元，七月十五為中元，十月十五為下元，分別屬天、地、水這三官大帝主管。上元節乃天官華誕，故燃燈以慶。終唐一代，朝廷皆正式祭拜。
The Lantern Festival is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar year in the lunar calendar marking the last day of the lunar New Year celebration.[1] It is usually in February or March in the Gregorian calendar. As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 25), it had become a festival with great significance.[2] During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night to temples carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns (simplified Chinese: 猜灯谜; traditional Chinese: 猜燈謎; pinyin: cāidēngmí; Jyutping: caai1dang1mai4).[3][4]
In ancient times, the lanterns were fairly simple, and only the emperor and noblemen had large ornate ones .[5] In modern times, lanterns have been embellished with many complex designs.[4] For example, lanterns are now often made in the shape of animals. The lanterns can symbolize the people letting go of their past selves and getting new ones,[6] which they will let go of the next year. The lanterns are almost always red to symbolize good fortune [7]
