Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief is a 2015 documentary film about Scientology. Directed by Alex Gibney, it is based on Lawrence Wright's book Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief (2013). Produced by HBO, the film premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. It has been nominated for seven Emmy Awards, and won three, including Best Documentary.

The film received widespread praise from critics for its deconstruction of the church's claims through a combination of presenting a condensed history of Scientology and its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, how celebrities interact with the church, the stories of a number of ex-members, and the abuse and exploitation the ex-members described seeing and experiencing. The Church of Scientology responded vehemently to the film, complaining to film critics about their reviews and denouncing the filmmakers and their interviewees.

Going Clear was released in a limited number of theaters on March 13, 2015 and aired on HBO on March 29, 2015. It was a major ratings success and by mid-April 2015 had attracted 5.5 million viewers, making it the second most-watched HBO documentary in the past decade. It was subsequently released internationally, showing in theaters and on television despite a sustained campaign by the Church of Scientology to block its release.

Miscavige and the media. The guy on the left is Marty Rathbun, on the right is Mike Rinder. They were senior officers in scientology.

Mark C. “Marty” Rathbun is a former senior executive of the Church of Scientology, who last held the post of Inspector General of the Religious Technology Center (RTC), the organization that is responsible for the protection and enforcement of all Dianetics and Scientology copyrights and trademarks.[3]

As the lead inspector overseeing the Inspector General Network at the international level, his official duties as described by RTC were to investigate and correct “instances in which departure from a standard, policy or ethic could betray an organization's service to its constituent public.”[4] The post is widely acknowledged as one of the most senior management functions in the hierarchy of the Church and its related organizations.[5] Rathbun left the Church of Scientology in 2004 and became an independent Scientologist, but now considers himself non-religious.[6]

Michael “Mike” John Rinder (/ˈrɪndər/; born April 10, 1955) is an Australian former senior executive of the Church of Scientology International (CSI) and the Sea Organization based in the United States.[3]

From 1982 to 2007, Rinder served on the Board of Directors of CSI and also held the post of Executive Director of its Office of Special Affairs, overseeing the corporate, legal and public relations matters of the Church at the international level.[4] Rinder left the Church in 2007 after becoming disillusioned with what he perceived to be the increasingly authoritarian nature of senior management under David Miscavige, instead becoming an independent Scientologist.[5][6]

Michelle Miscavige (aka Shelly), David Miscavige's wife, disappeared in 2007.

This began, when actress Leah Remini asked about her at Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes's wedding, which lead to Leah Remini quitting Scientology, filed a missing persons report to police, and huge scandals.
