Which is more common, the curly single quote or the apostrophe, such as used in it is abbreviation?

the problem with the curly single quote

is that it is a matching pair used in Brit english for ‘quotation’. therefore if you use it as apostrophe, it creates mismatched character pairs.
so, in my writings, i always use
