Discovered that my favorite movie Farewell My Concubine (film) (1993) (霸王别姬) is on youtube.
It's a epic tragedy. This would be one of my top 10 all time favorite movie.
The movie views a tumultuous period of China from 1924 to 1977, thru the story of 3 protagonists. The sino-japanese war, communist vs nationalist civil war, and the mess of Cultural Revolution. From it, you learn what political turmoil means to average citizens. The pain, the suffering. And, it also shows the old generation's thoughts, about opera, life.
